At Lexington Dental Group in Lexington, MA, we tell our patients to avoid caffeine, cigarettes, sodas, and other things that stain our teeth. Most of these have chemicals called chromogens. Chromogens darken our teeth, especially in high concentrations. When someone continues to consume these things, their teeth will become darker.
Stained teeth can be yellow, brown, or even gray. Yellow teeth are easy to whiten using bleach in whitening products. Darker teeth, however, might not respond. When that’s the case, we can rely on veneers to give your teeth the look you want and restore your smile.
We make sure our patients know here at Lexington Dental Group that veneers are cosmetic procedures. Not getting veneers doesn’t carry any risk. They’re used to make teeth look better but play no role in treating decay or dental infections.
Veneers are thin dental appliances we place on the front surfaces of teeth to make them look better. We’ll take precise measurements of your teeth and send them to a lab so the veneers can be made specifically for you. When we get them back, we’ll have you come in for installation. Applying veneers requires removal of 0.5mm of the teeth getting the veneers. This can’t be reversed.
Most patients opt to get veneers for their front teeth only as these are the most prominent ones when we smile. If you want to, however, we can set you up with veneers for all of your teeth.
There are no special instructions for you to follow after getting veneers. You’ll stop noticing how they feel in your mouth within hours to a few days. Patients can also eat the same day they get their veneers. The only thing to take care of is the type of food you eat or chew on. Most veneers last between 5 to 10 years.
