FIELDS WITH AN ASTERISK ARE MANDATORY

Looking to treat a damaged, chipped, or cracked tooth? Inlays and onlays provide durable protection and strength.

Inlays and onlays are often used to restore damaged teeth and provide support to the dental cavity. Our dental team will be happy to counsel you on the benefits, procedures, rates, and after-care options.

What Is an Inlay and How Does It Differ from an Onlay?

A pre-molded dental inlay is inserted into the grooves of a tooth and does not wrap itself around the cusps. We first help the patient relax and use a local anesthetic to numb the tooth area and then clean out the decay in the cavity by drilling into the tooth.

Inlays are ideal for teeth where the cusps have not been affected by injuries or decay. Our dental staff will take an impression of the tooth and send it to a laboratory to get an inlay made.

Patients can choose from porcelain or composite resin inlays; in general, porcelain inlays are more durable compared to composite resin ones.

An onlay may be used when the damage or decay is more extensive and has extended over to the cusps or tips of the teeth. Our experienced dentists will carefully examine your oral cavity and tooth and recommend an inlay or onlay as required.

Inlays and Onlays Procedure at Lexington Dental Group

Once the dentist examines your teeth, he or she will get a temporary inlay or onlay made. The permanent ones are usually ready in a week or so.

We may ideally recommend inlays instead of a filling if:

  • The damage does not affect the cusps or biting surfaces of the teeth
  • The injury does not allow for enough removal of tooth material to warrant a crown
  • A very large dental filling may weaken the structure
