Meet the Dentist

Carolyn Schweitzer, DDS
General Dentist

Dr. Carolyn Schweitzer is an educated and experienced dentist who loves what she does, and it shows.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Ithaca, NY. She went on to attend SUNY at Buffalo School of Dentistry where she received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery and completed her General Practice Residency at Buffalo General and Deaconess Hospitals.

She has a great deal of dental experience as well as a great deal of life experience. Having suddenly become a new mom in her mid-forties, she can relate to both young patients who are raising a family, and older patients who are going through life changes that accompany aging. “BOTH are happening to me at the same time!” she says.

Dr. Schweitzer is also what she calls a “continuing education junky”. The methods, materials, and science behind what dentists do are ever-changing and she believes that you either keep up or get left behind.

Her most recent accomplishment is becoming a Certified Sleep Consultant with over 80 hours of training in the field of sleep medicine at the Dental Future Center in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. She is excited to embark on another series of classes at the Breathing Wellness Center in Denver, Colorado.  Dr. Schweitzer is an active member of the American Dental Association, the Massachusetts Dental Society, and is currently working toward accreditation in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

For her, being a dentist is the perfect blend of art and science, her two favorite subjects.  She says “Both of my parents were school teachers, and the word is “doctor” was derived from the Latin verb “docēre” which means 'to teach'.  And I enjoy teaching my patients about their oral health and wellness, from prevention to diet to understanding their oral health and how it can be optimized.  Making positive changes in patient’s health and overall wellness and relieving their pain is not just my profession, it’s my passion.”

Dr. Schweitzer is also aware that many patients are anxious about the dentist, even if they can’t recall a single bad experience, and she works to calm their fears and make visits as pleasant as possible.  Patients appreciate Dr. Schweitzer’s gentle chairside manner and empathetic nature. “I don’t judge my patients. Just about every procedure I perform, I’ve also experienced as a patient,” she says. Patients also love how sneaky she is with anesthetic and are often surprised they just got a “shot”.

Dr.Schweitzer is very musical and often hums or sings while working. Patients have often commented that they find this very calming.

With her strong interest in sleep medicine as a sub-specialty of dentistry, Dr. Schweitzer gets to know her patients and builds long-term, lasting relationships.  She works to figure out what challenges patients may be dealing with that they’re potentially unaware of. “There are so many exciting things going on in the area of sleep health, integrative medicine, and total health, and I’m always studying to stay at the forefront of these knowledge bases,” she says.

Originally from Westchester County, New York, Dr. Schweitzer now resides in Maynard.  When she’s not practicing, she is still working with her hands and creating. Growing up, she learned various forms of needlecraft (knitting, sewing, embroidery, rug hooking, even making yarn on a spinning wheel) and honed her skills at drawing and sculpting. Her artistic and creative tendencies give her a good eye for aesthetics and detail.

Cooking was something she never felt she had time to learn, but now she’ll tell you “When my son was old enough to ask why everything we ate was frozen or take-out, that changed and I discovered cooking as my newest outlet for creating.  I really enjoy cooking with fresh, organic ingredients.”

After experiencing sickness as a child, she really wanted to become a healthy, athletic adult, which led her to martial arts while in dental school, where she began with a form of Chinese Kung Fu. When she moved to the Boston area she took up Karate and achieved a first-degree black belt. She also enjoys yoga and working out at the gym.

Dr. Schweitzer is accepting new patients at the beautiful Lexington office at 57 Bedford Street, Suite 110.  Call to schedule an appointment, today!
